When he died in 1838, his wife took over the ranch and continued to run it until her death in 1859. She bequeathed it to her son John Dickinson II who made it his home until his death in 1908. In 1906, the land that makes up Dickinson was annexed into Austin as part of the city limits. The first post office for Dickinson opened on October 15, 1836., It was moved to its current location on February 8, 1840.} The first school for white children in this area opened on September 16, 1839..
