The Dickinson Texas Army National Guard’s 146th Infantry Regiment was originally organized in 1903 as the Seventh Texas Infantry. The regiment served in World War I, earning a reputation for being one of the best units in the army. After the war, it was again called to serve in World War II and was an important part of the US military effort against Japan. In 1946, the regiment was redesignated as the 146th Infantry Regiment and assigned to duty with the United States Army Reserve Forces. It served until 1989 when it was disbanded due to budget cuts. Since its disbanding, however, there have been sporadic efforts by individuals or groups within Dickinson to revive interest in preserving military history among local people and businesses. One example is a project led by City of Dickinson historian Don Sheppard which preserves artillery ammunition found at two sites around town. Additionally, efforts are underway to create a museum devoted to American military culture in downtown Dickinson and another focus on highlighting veterans’ stories is planned for later this year near Veterans Memorial Park on Highway 287.

Dickinson, Texas is a city in and the county seat of Dickinson County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Brazos River near its confluence with the Trinity River. The city was named for General Samuel Dickenson who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Texas. The first settlement in Dickinson County was made by a group of farmers led by John Crouch in 1836. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Dickinson served as a Union garrison town on White Sands Creek. When Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army attacked Austin on April 14–15, 1865, Dickinson forces helped to repel his attack and protect downtown Austin from capture or destruction. On November 5, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant issued an Executive Order creating Dickinson County out of parts of Travis and Burnet Counties which then merged into Dallas County

Dickinson, Texas is located in the central part of the United States and it is named for Lydia Dickinson, who was a settler in what is now known as Wichita County. The first people to live in what is now Dickinson were the Wichita Indians. They hunted and camped there for many years. A group of settlers from Pennsylvania came to Dickinson in 1819 and they founded a town called Live Oak. In 1830, some more Texans came to Dickinson and they renamed it after General Sam Houston because he had been governor of Texas at that time. The town grew quickly and by 1836, it had a population of over 1,000 people. It was during this time that the first school was built in Dickinson. By 1840, the town had also acquired an arsenal and post office. In 1844, another group of Texans arrived here and they named the community Post Oak after Postmaster General John Hogg because he had played a major role in helping to establish Texas as an American state. The growth of Dickinson continued until 1861 when Confederate forces invaded America and took over most of Texas including Dickinson. The community slowly began to decline after that event until it ceased altogether in 1865 when Union forces liberatedTexas from Confederate rule
