The Texas Air Force at Dickinson AFB has been providing service to the nation since 1941. The facility is home to the 1st Fighter Wing, which is responsible for aerial warfare in the Texan airspace. The wing also operates two other wings: the 121st Airlift Wing and 83rd Intelligence Wing. Additionally, the USAF operates a number of Field Operations Centers throughout Texas. The history of airforce gift giving in Dickinson begins with World War I when American airmen left their homes and families behind to fight in Europe. In 1925, local businessman J.D. Rackham donated $5,000 towards aircraft procurement at Dickinson AFB and an additional donation was made in 1928 for $10,000 more. These donations allowed Dickinson AFB to purchase its first military aircraft – an F4U Corsair – and began purchases of larger planes such as the P-40 Warhawk and F6F Hellcat during World War II. During World War II, Dickinson served as a production center for both bombers and fighters for the United StatesAAF. It produced more airplanes than any other airport in America including 507 single-engine fighter planes (the majority were P-51 Mustangs), 529 twin-engine fighter planes (the majority were P-38 Lightnings), 413 bomber planes (31% were B-26 Mitchells/Pilots) and over 100 jet aircraft (27% were Lockheed L1AJ Constellation). In 1949, when military aviation became part of NASA there was a need for new facilities specifically designed to house space vehicles that would operate out of Earth's orbit like Sputnik 1 or 2 or 3 etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera! With this new found interest in outer space came a demand from our friends across the pond for Aeronautical gifts! And so on 7th December 1949Dickinson AFB hosted one of those lovely little events called 'Air Force Christmas'. At this event approximately 50 civilian Aeronautical gifts were given away by members of the RAF who had come over on Spitfires ! This event was so nice because it helped show how much we loved our friends back at home !!!!! So thank you all from us here at Dickinson AFB & many thanks too Mrs Rackham !!!!!!!!!

Dickinson, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, about 25 miles east of Austin. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. The Dickinson Massacre took place on November 3, 1881 when Confederate soldiers and cowboys killed six Union men as they worked their way through the cornfields of Dickinson to get to the store. The incident has been memorialized by Forrest Gump with the line "I never did understand why they Killing us all." Dickinson is home to both the Texas History Museum and the Pioneer-Families Museum. In addition to its historical significance, Dickinson also has a rich cultural heritage that includes music and poetry performances by local artists each year in October/November.
