The Dickinson Air Force Base has been providing air support for the state of Texas since 1941. The base was formerly known as Garland Field and opened its doors to the public on October 1, 1941. During World War II, the air force deployed gift history to various locations in Texas including Fort Worth, Dallas-Ft Worth, Waco and San Antonio. The base saw its first combat action during the Korean War when aircraft were used in strikes against North Korea. Since 1991, when gift baskets became available on Stratofortress aircraft operations through Special Delivery Program (SDP), Gift Basket Day has become an annual event observed by all members of the USAF community. SDP allowsAF personnel who are out flyovering or conducting overflights near populated areas or at night time to drop off specially packaged gift baskets at local businesses or homes within 2 hours after departing their airspace. This year’s SDP donation effort will include more than 20 different items including boxed food items such as hot dogs and churros, along with games like guitar chords for children ornaments for adults!
