The first officers were all volunteers and most of them were farmers who traveled to the town of Desoto to help out. The Rangers became responsible for patrols throughout the area and they also began providing emergency services such as medical aid and protection. By 1907, Desoto had its own police department and it continued growing until World War II when it was disbanded due to budget cuts. After the war, Desoto reverted back to an open-air market town with no police department. However, this didn’t last long as in 1955 a new Police Department was created thanks to Governor John Connally. The original Officers on the new unit were all breeders of horses who helped provide law enforcement within the town limits. The unit remained active until 1978 when it was replaced by the present day Police Department which is located at 210 E Houston Street in downtown Desoto.
