The USS Desoto was a built in the early 1920s by the yard of George Brown & Sons, Ltd. She served as a cargo ship and then became the USS Desoto (APD-5) during World War II. After the war she was sold to Cuba and renamed La Princesa. She was scrapped in 1967.
Desoto is a small town located in Stafford County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,441 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The town was founded on November 17, 1881 by John Desoto and his family. The first post office was established in 1882, and the first store opened in 1886. In 1902, Desoto became an incorporated municipality with a population of just under 100 citizens. On December 12, 1916, during World War I there were two bombings in Desoto - one from German submarines and the other from American planes flown from Montrose Field - both resulting in injuries to many people and damage to property. In 1954 Desoto hosted the Miss America pageant which took place at Sam Houston Coliseum; this event remains as one of history's most prestigious beauty pageants today. From 1978 until 1984 it also held its annual Texas floods carnival which featured such attractions as go-karts, water balloon tosses and high diving contests among other attractions

Desoto is a town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The largest shopping center in Desoto is the Desoto Mall. Other nearby shopping malls include Arlington Mills and Mesquite Mills. The town was platted in 1872 by George P. Beal and Wm. Ladd as a farming village on the east side of what is now Gregg County near present day Arlington, TX. In 1876, it became an " incorporated" town with A Fractional Share Tax being levied to support public schools which were then located downtown. In 1905, when Texas became a state, Desoto became its county seat and remained so until 1907 when Randall County was created from portions of Gregg and Harris counties including parts of Desoto Township (now part of Mesquite) In 1915 Desoto's post office closed due to low mail volume; however it reopened on July 1st same year with Wm Henson as its first Postmaster The first desultory fighting between US soldiers and Mexican forces took place in this vicinity during World War I about 10 miles northeast of present day Desoto on October 15 1917 while unit #7th Cavalry Regiment - 8th Brigade Combat Team - 2nd Infantry Division was Camped out looking for tracks leading north towards Tarrant City near Fort Worth
The Desoto Massacre took place on October 5, 1835, when a group of Mexicans who had been working in the cattle ranch of Antonio de la Vega were massacred by U.S. forces under the command of General Zachary Taylor. The event is considered one of the most notorious massacres in American history and remains one of the deadliest episodes in Texas' history.
