Desoto, Texas is a small town located in east-central Texas. It was founded in 1836 by Timoteo Desoto and his family. The community became an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1907, Desoto was named the county seat of San Patricio County. The population of Desoto decreased during the 1930s because of the Great Depression, but increased during World War II when local businesses made significant contributions to the war effort. The population decreased again during the 1970s and 1980s as a result of a variety of factors including Rustling Gables development and steady economic growth in neighboring Amarillo. However, during recent years, Desotos resurgence has led to new development in the town and it is now one of its most vibrant communities. The first settlers to come to what is now Desoto were Spanish explorers who traveled through central Texas in search for new lands to conquer. By 1836, Timoteo DesOTO had settled there with his families after finding land that he thought would be good for farming and ranching. At first, few people lived in this area because it was too hot and too dry for agriculture; however, over time some residents decided to make their homes hereabouts due to its strategic location on crossroads connecting several important trails that crossed through central TX at that time (the Santa Fe Trail being one). In 1907, when San Patricio County was created from portions of East Texas then known as Archer City (later Tomball) County, Desoto became its county seat – making him one of only a handful of counties nationwide at that point designated as such by law (the others being Dallas/Fort Worth). As part as playing an important role within San Patricio County government – both before and afterWorld War II – DESOTO also saw active business investment throughout those years which helped contribute materially To the overall success story our town enjoyed during those years!
