The Coast Guard in Desoto, Texas was first organized on December 15, 1916. The first Coast Guard Station in the town was built at the mouth of the Rio Grande. In 1937, a new Headquarters and District Office were built on East Commerce Street. The present facilities were constructed in 1951 and include a Patrol Boat Dock, Aquarium, Museum, and Recreation Center. The Coast Guard provides emergency services to the community and its residents through its six stations located throughout the County of Brazoria: Lighthouse Point (500 feet offshore), Cedar Key (100 feet offshore), Ponce de Leon (50 feet offshore), San Antonio Bayou (10 feet offshore), Corpus Christi Island (5 feet deep water) In 1935, a second Coast Guard Station was established in Desoto when it became apparent that Lighthouse Point could not be manned because of weather conditions. A patrol boat dock and beach landing were also constructed at Cedar Key. In 1946 a third station was established at Ponce de Leon when it became necessary toWinterize San Antonio Bayou due to high levels of water caused by Hurricane Hilda. James Desoto was born in 1795 in what is now part of Des Moines, Iowa Territory. He moved to Texas in 1836 and started a ranch near present-day San Antonio. In 1915, Admiral Ernest J Elkins sent a letter requesting that the United States Postal Service provide postage stamps for Coast Guard academies so that officers could give degree degrees or medals to their service animals. In 1925, Rear Admiral David C Andrews donated a golden retriever named Walter to be attached to Headquarters Squadron One at Pearl Harbor. "Walter symbolized all that was goodhearted and friendly about naval aviation," said Rear Admiral Andrews in his autobiography . "He never left my side during our long deployments around typhoons, hurricanes and earthquakes." After World War II, it became common for generals and admirals to send their pets as gifts from across the globe. For example, General Dwight D Eisenhower sent his shih tzu named Winston as a present to Commander-in-Chief Royal Navy HMS Nelson during Eisenhower's visit in 1957; Controller of Naval Air Station Patuxent River Lt.-Cmdr Tom Brophy gave his New Zealand white Kiwi crossdog named Mitzi as a gift in 1978 when she joined the U.S Armed Forces; and Vice President Al Gore made a presentation on behalf of The United States Maritime Administration (USMAR) with two shih tzus named Joe & Bob at Washington National Cathedral on November 7th, 2000.[1] It wasn't until after 9/11 when servicemen started bringingWS2002 Guiding Dogs into Afghanistan as part of Operation Neptune's Spear[2], which further demonstrated how essential service dogs are within our military community today.
