On July 1, 1991, Cameron COUNTY disbanded and its remaining portion became part of Angelina COUNTY again; on that date, all functions associated with Cameron COUNTY were transferred to Angelina County government including county seat eligibility for desultory elections (i.e., unincorporated areas not within any municipality are not subject to election). On January 10, 2007 West Texas A&M University announced that it had selected Desoto as one of six campuses slated for construction on a $200 million campus adjacent to I-10 outside Lubbock; construction started in fall 2008 and is expected to be completed by 2020.
