Desoto, Texas is a small town in the United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of Midland County. The town was founded in 1881 by Gus Desoto and his wife Cilla. Gus Desoto's father had been born in Mexico and came to the United States when he was five years old. He started a flour mill in what is now Desoto and operated it until 1911. Gus DeSoto Jr., who succeeded his father as owner of the mill, died in 1922. His son Gus DeSoto III took over the business and ran it until 1966 when it became a subsidiary of White Sands Mining Corporation. At that time, White Sands Mining Corporation merged with other mining companies to become Mesa Minerals Corporation (Mesa Minerals). In 1990 Mesa Minerals Corporation bought out White Sands Mining Corp., making Desoto an incorporated community once again. In 2002, American Silver Fields Incorporated bought Mesa Minerals Corporation for $1 million from its parent company American Silver Fields Holdings Incorporated which owned about 60% of Mesa Minerals Corporation shares outstanding at that time.

This program continues until now and offers financial assistance up to $50,000 per year for family members of active duty members or their dependents who have been awarded a DAP awardee’s honorable discharge or separation from service pursuant to Chapter 5 U.S CODE § 765(a)(1) (the “Discharge”). Additionally since 2001 there has been a program called "Eliminate Poverty Grants" which provides scholarships up to $25,000 per recipient per year
