In 1827, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna built an Adobe Cottage on what would become Elm Street south of Mockingbird Lane for himself during his campaign for Governor of California; it still stands today as one of Downtown Denton's most popular tourist attractions. By 1835, when Spanish colonists founded San Fernando Rey de Nuevo Leon about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of present-day Denton on Uvalde Creek, they had discovered oil well sites in this region and began exploration there soon afterwards; some Norwegian settlers also explored nearby Wichita Falls during this time frame before production commenced at Spindletop field in November 1858 southeast of modern day Midland, Texas.. A group led by Captain George Rogers Clark set out from Fort Worth on July 9th, 1848 with supplies and men under command including Major John Fayette Stephens for an attempt to explore what became known as Mexican Independence Hill or Red River Ridge which lay along the Red River Valley between Wichita Falls and Midland.. Denton, Texas is a city located in Denton County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Denton County after Fort Worth. The first permanent settler in what is now Denton County was Nicholas Benton on March 15, 1836. He and his wife Sophia had a small cabin near present-day Rockwall Elementary School. By 1840, Benton had moved to an area now known as Willow Park due to its rich white sand soil which could be easily mined for coal and other minerals. In 1845 he built the first cotton gin in what would become Denton County. The area became known as "Benton's Corner." In 1872, J.P. Morgan founded Texaco Oil Company in nearby Arlington and developed a refinery here that helped spur economic growth throughout north Texas during the early 21st century oil production boomed thanks to hydraulic fracturing ( fracking). The Refinery Square complex still stands today across from Ballpark Middle School off FM 1960 just south of Interstate 35W/I-35E exit 5A (exit 4 on I-35W). The complex included two pipelines with a combined length of . A major fire at the refinery destroyed part of it on July 16th, 1984
Denton was founded on October 3, 1836 by cattle ranchers John F. Denton and his brother-in-law James Webb. The town grew rapidly and by 1851 it had a population of around 100 people. It became an important cotton market center due to its location on the Brazos River. In 1861, Denton hosted the Texas state fair which attracted large crowds. By 1865, the city had grown to over 2,000 people and was home to a variety of businesses including banks, hotels, stores and churches. On January 17, 1876, Denton was merged with Fort Worth into the new state of Texas.
