Denton is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 1,619 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Denton County. It was named after George Baylor Denton, an early settler and congressman from Kentucky. The city began as a small town on the banks of the Trinity River in 1879 and grew rapidly with construction of railroads and other development. In 1915, it became an independent municipality and in 1925 was annexed by Dallas. Denton experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its location within range of B-24 Liberator bombers flying strategic bombing missions over Japan. The Bombing Survey report "The Employment Situation in Selected Areas Targeted forbombing" (WAC 54-571) found that "Denton has been one of the most heavily bombed areas...TheBombing Survey estimated that 1,868 people have died from Bomber Attacks on the City since Hiroshima." Following World War II, Denton experienced a period of economic prosperity thanks to oil exploration and production heralded by new industries such as information technology and medical isotope research. However, this boom was short-lived; following the 2008 financial crisis, joblessness increased and economic conditions crashed throughout much of Texas. In 2013, Denton joined Austin as one of 25 cities across Texas experiencing significant unrest following municipal budget cuts that were made without public hearings or input from residents or business owners who had lost jobs or saw their wages decrease as a result. In response to these changes, Mayor Rusty Litherland convened a community meeting to discuss ways to keep Denton thriving despite challenging economic times while also protecting neighborhood character and values like open space and low crime rates. Denton was founded by pioneers who arrived from Illinois in 1836. The first settlers were families of French Canadians who had migrated to what is now Tarrant County in 1834. In 1836, two brothers named George and John Denton settled on a farm west of town on the Trinity River. In 1840, they sold their land to James A. Cook for $2 per acre (0.48 ha). By 1849, all but one family of the original settlers had died or moved away: the Dennetts bought another farm four miles east of town and continued to live there until their death in 1909. Denton's growth began with railroads coming through town in the 1870s; these new arrivals brought with them new businesses and residents which helped spur development around the railroad stations and along busy intersections that would become familiar throughout much of North Texas today. The arrival of automobiles also played a significant role during this time - early residents took public transportation to work downtown because there were no cars on site!
