Denison is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County. The Denison area was settled by Anglo-American families in 1879 as part of the Great Plains region. The town was founded on April 1, 1881 by John A. Denison and his wife Emma Maynard Denison, two sisters from Ohio who had come to live with their parents near Waco, Texas. It became a small farming community with only two stores and one post office until 1907 when it became its own municipality with a population of 150 residents. In 1907, the town incorporated as a city under the name of "City of Denison" and began to develop into an important commercial center for central Texas. By 1920, there were 10 businesses in "City of Denison." In 1925, Mayor John Fenton designated "City of Denison" as the site for what would become Texarkana – now Dallas – so that both cities could have access to interstate Highway 20 which then connected them both centrally. Known for its innovative products like Perspex (a type of plastic) and Bakelite (a type of aluminum), Sperry Place soon became a mainstay among denizens for their shopping needs; along with other businesses that cropped up over time such asgrain elevator operator Washburn Elevator Co., meatpacking house Pecos Meat Packers Inc., fabric store Gartner & Sons Ltd., shoe store Sears & RoebuckInc., bank First National Bank c/o State Banking Company and post office First Canadian Bank before finally being demolished in 1969 after more than 50 years service! It wasn't until 1950 when oil started flowing through DENISON Creek that growth truly took off; businesses started sprouting up around the creek such as grocery store Aldi Supermarket which opened shortly thereafter and hotel Texaco Motel which served residents throughout much of the 1960s into the early 2000s!
