The Denison Navy deployed gift history can begin in the early 1900s when the city of Denison, Texas was founded. The city was named after Admiral John B. Denison who was military governor of Texas during the Mexican-American War. He served as a general in that war and later became president of Baylor University. In 1915, he donated land to the city for a public square and in 1921, he gave $10,000 to create the Baylor Foundation which funded many different charities including education, health care and social welfare. In 1941, Admiral Denison Jr. donated another $10,000 to create the Admiral John B. Denison Foundation for Missions in Southeast Asia which provided financial assistance to missionaries working in that region during World War II. Denison, Texas is a small town located in Midland County, Texas. The population was 8,763 at the 2010 census. Denison is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Denison area has been inhabited by Native Americans since the Four Corners region was discovered by European explorers in 1602. The area was first called "Cottonwood" because of the many cottonwoods that grew thereabouts. In 1881, an oil well was drilled in what is now Denison and natural gas began to be produced from it in 1902. The city of Wichita Falls was incorporated in 1907 and Denison became its vice versa in 1912. When Wichita Falls merged with Fort Worth to form Arlington County, Denison lost its status as a city but retained its position as an agricultural center for Midland County. In 1953, Dwight D Eisenhower stimulus package required all American towns with a population over 5,000 to file Community Development Plans (CDPs). In response to this requirement, Mayor John Fenton formed the Denison Development Corporation which developed land within the limits of the city for use as housing and other community services such as schools and parks. Denison is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County. Denison was founded by James Denison in 1868 as a small settlement on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1879, Denison became part of what would become Midland County and its first Mayor was Wm. J. Hickey who served until 1880 when John Pemberton took office and remained until 1890 when he resigned to take office as U.S. Senator from Texas with Elihu Root as his Secretary of State due to political differences over Reconstruction policies in that state then under Democratic rule. In 1903, Denison incorporated as a city and had its original downtown business district built out parallel to I-10 which today forms the eastern edge of downtown with several blocks of commercial buildings erected along it between 18th and 19th Streets NW (now Independence Avenue). In 1916, Denison established itself as an agricultural center with extensive cotton/corn land holdings east of Railroad Row extending into present day Wichita Falls and Fort Worth counties; these lands were later divided among various heirs including current Mayor Wiley Epps' great-grandfathers Earle Hanks Epps and Harry Sanford Epps who are both billionaires currently owning over 50% interests in DENISON Corporation annual revenues exceed $180 million making it one of largest privately held businesses in North America. On November 3rd, 1907 citizens voted by referendum to ratify Moultrie Act No 11 (the "Texas Constitution Amendment") amending the Texas Constitution providing for independent municipal government within Travis County without reference to Dallas or Austin City Councils or any other municipality within Travis County except DENISON which at that time consisted only of its downtown core surrounded by unincorporated rural areas lying outside Travis County limits including present day Wichita Falls and Fort Worth counties; this amendment also provided for DENISON's incorporation into Travis County on January 1st 1908 effective immediately upon ratification thereby becoming one sidekick municipality unto itself within what would become now Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area - allbeit not having representation on either local or national levels on account being located exclusively inside Travis Counties boundaries! In 1869, Denison was founded by John D. Denison and his wife Anna. The town became a center for cattle ranching and agriculture, with Denison becoming the largest city in Texas. The city hosted the first political rally in Texas in 1893, and also played a role in the Southwest Texas Railroad Wars of the 1870s. In 1925, Denison was annexed by El Paso County; however, it reverted to its original name upon annexation.
