The Denison community began as a small farming and ranching town in 1881 when German immigrants founded the town on land they had bought from what is now Arlington County. After World War II, Denison grew rapidly due to its importance as an oil refinery and manufacturing center for Texaco and other energy companies. The population reached 1,500 by 1960 but then declined until it reached 576 in 2010. Denison was founded in 1876 by George Denison and his wife, Maria. The town rapidly grew and soon became a vital center for the Texas oil industry. In 1916, Denison was named the capital of Texas. The city has remained an important cultural and economic center in the state ever since. Today, Denison is home to a diverse population that includes both residents from all over the United States and people from around the world who visit its many businesses and attractions. The history of Denison began with George Denison’s determination to find a viable place to live in central Texas. He had seen only fruitless searches for land in what was then Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). When he met Maria, she shared her home with him and their children while they looked for new land. They found it when they bought 3,000 acres of land east of present-day Denison on the banks of the Red River. On July 1, 1876, they laid out their town on this property, calling it “Denison Springs” after their home in England where George had been born just six months earlier. The first permanent settlers arrived in early 1877; within two years, there were 50 homes built along three streets: Main Street (later renamed Broadway), Second Street (later renamed South street), and West Street (later renamed North street). By 1880, there were 400 residents living in Denison Springs alone! George Demeson Sr., one of the original settlers and father-in-law to George Jr., played an instrumental role in helping start up DENISON Oil Company Limited – now known as ExxonMobil – which located its first production well at denisonspring on November 16th 1902 DENISON OIL COMPANY LIMITED was incorporated on November 16th 1902 under US Patent No 616 585 In 1911 DENISON CITY COUNCIL WAS FORMED TO SUPPORT THE STATE OF TEXAS DUTY IN PROVIDING FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF PUBLIC ORDER AND GOOD RELIANCE UPON LAW AND ORDER IN THE COMMUNITY DENISON CITY COUNCIL WAS FIRST AUTHORIZED ON MAY 15TH 1911 BY THE LEGISLATURE OF TEXAS AS A BILL TO ESTABLISH A WAIVER FROM THE STATE GOVERNMENT LIMITATIONS ON ELECTIONS TO ORGANIZE CITIES ISSUED PURSUANT TO ARTICLE IV OF OUR CONSTITUTION . On December 2nd 1915 DENISON CITY COUNCIL DECIDED THAT IT WOULD BE NECESSARY FOR THEM TO APPEAL ANY CLAIMS AGAINST OFFICERS OR EMPLOYEES OF THE STATE GOVERNMENT WHOSE ACTIONS CAUSED DISORDER OR RESULTED IN VIOLENCE IN DENISON . On January 10th 1916 GENERAL JAMES MCDOWELL CALLED A SPECIAL Session Of The City Council To Consider An Amendment To The City Charter For The Purpose Of Making It More Clear That The Mayor And Commissioners Were Responsible Only To The City Council And Not To Any Other Entity Or Person . On January 17th 1916 AN AMENDMENT WAS PASSED WITH THIS INCREASE SO THAT NOWTHE COUNTY COMMISSIONER MAKES NO REPRESENTATION OR INTEREST IN ANY MATTER CONTAININGIN HIS COUNTY . Governor John Connally Signed This Amendment Into Law As Part of His Agenda For Presidential Victory In 1976
