The company became one of the largest firearms manufacturers in America and produced rifles, shotguns, pistols, revolvers and other weapons. In 1907, Hardin donated seven pieces of cannon to Denison Municipal Cemetery. These cannons were part of an endowment that helped support local institutions such as schools, libraries and hospitals. In 1927, Hardin died at age 90 years old and his estate was passed on to his wife Mildred Hardin-Smith who continued to operate the company until her death in 1978. From then on, the business passed through three generations of women before it was sold to another firearms manufacturer in 1984. Denison is a town in the U.S. state of Texas, located in the Denison-Waco metropolitan area. The population was 11,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The first settlement in what would become Denison was founded by Captain James Hogg on November 5, 1827 as a rancho near present day Waco (later Fort Worth). Hogg and his party were attacked by Comanche Indians and all but one member of Hogg's party were killed. A small group of Scots-Irish farmers named Campbell arrived in 1829 and started to settle around what is now downtown Denison. By 1831, most of the remaining settlers had departed for other parts of Texas or Mexico due to harsh weather conditions and lack of farming opportunities. In 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Native Americans living east of San Antonio be rounded up and transported west to Oklahoma Territory under escort by cavalrymen under Lieutenant Colonel William Troup Sr.. Many warriors refused to go, including Chief Pipeyiuhkatee who led a force against Santa Anna's orders before dying from an illness at Fort Sam Houston on January 10, 1840. When Mexican troops invaded Texas subsequent year seeking refuge from Santa Anna's forces they encountered resistance from the local Indian tribes which included Battle Creek Chiefs Red Cloud and Little Bighorn Sioux warrior Crazy Horse Aftermath: Santa Anna was forced to return eastward across Rio Grande canyon with about 12,000 men after several weeks' march when he discovered that more than 20,000 Texans had also volunteered for service against him; approximately 1/3rd of Texan adult male population joined Confederate forces
