The Denison Air Force Base was established in 1942 and is one of the most important military installations in Texas. It is home to the 6th Bombardment Wing, which is responsible for launching American bombers intoOperation Overlord, the assault on Normandy during World War II. The base also houses the 571st Airlift Wing, which provides airlift support to Operation Iraqi Freedom and other military operations. Denison (population: 25,000) is a small town in Texas located about sixty miles northeast of Dallas. The Denison name was given to the community by General James H. Denison who served as the military governor of Texas from 1849 to 1850. The community was founded on November 3, 1868, by George W. Taylor and his family who purchased land east of Fort Worth. The population grew rapidly after incorporation and development began in the early 1870s with mills, churches, schools, and businesses opening up. By 1912 Denison had become an important agricultural center with over one hundred farms and ranches dotting its landscape. In 1914 Denion became the site of the world’s first commercial oil well when Texaco drilled a well at White Sands which produced more than three thousand barrels per day for four years until production was discontinued due to depletion of resources. The town experienced another period of growth during World War II when it became home to many factories making munitions such as aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Lockheed Martin as well as other war-related products like tanks and ships. However, denison declined following the war with shrinking population rates along with increases in prices for necessities like food and gasoline relative to those in other developed communities. Since denison’s decline there have been several efforts to revive it including developing new industries such as medical technology or retail trade but none have proven successful enough to keep the town alive beyond occasional visits by visitors interested in seeing its history or taking part in activities like concerts or rodeos.) The history of Denison begins with George W Taylor who arrived in what is now denISON on November 3rd, 1868 after purchasing some 640 acres east of Fort Worth from Major John Sellers for $4,000 dollars Taylor's purchase included land that would later be known as "The Village", "The Downs", "Farmers Bend" and finally "DenISON". A post office called "DenISON" was established in 1870 under postal regulation #1 and remained operational until 1898 When railroad construction reached DENISON it quickly became an important stop on both trains coming into Fort Worth Industrial District then westward into central TX all while remaining within local boundaries In 1875(?) JH Denton bought 8 acres northwest of present day DENION just south of FM 620 for $600 dollars cash which he named "Denton's Addition" after himself In 1886 G W Foust moved his mill & gristmill 1 mile northwest on FM 620 out from where today's Kress Elementary School stands & this area would come to be known as Foust Park
