The Denison Air Force Base Museum is one of the few remaining military installations in Texas that has a presence of the United States Air Force. The museum, located within the base, traces its history back to 1941 when it was established as an airfield for the local service. It was during World War II that Denison AFB became a center for advanced bombing and fighter training; later it became home to America's first operational jet fighter squadron. In 1956, the wing headquarters moved from Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio to Denison AFB and the bomber squadron was redesignated as the 9th Bombardment Wing. In 1961, Denison AFB became home to America's first Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) which operated Northrop F-5E/F Super Sabres and Republic RF-4 Phantom jets. The wing played a significant role in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm; both campaigns were highly successful in achieving USAF objectives while also demonstrating technological advances. During Operation Joint Endeavor in 1992-1993,Denison AFB hosted components of NATO's multinational force known as Allied Forces Europe (AFE). At present day, Denion AFB continues its important role within the USAF by hosting three squadrons: 1st Squadron (Air Combat Command), 2nd Squadron ( Interceptors), 3rd Squadron (Extended Range Photography) and 4th Squadron (Aero Tasks). The museum contains over 50 aircraft from various branches of service including Boeing 727s donated by American Airlines; Lockheed P-3C Orion maritime patrol planes donated by Pacific Aviation Company; Douglas DC-8s donation from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport; McDonnell Douglas MD-11Cs gift from Midway International Airport; Cessna 172s donation from Wichita Municipal Airport - all of which have been displayed on static displays or flown into DENISON for open air display. Additionally, several gift vehicles are on display such as an Henschel HU 100M presidential transport plane gifted by President Harry S Truman and twoLockheed YF 26J1 Nimitz bombers donated by Pacific Aviation Company respectively. As part of its history, DENISON AFB has also participated in numerous shows throughout Texas highlighting aspects of military aviation including flyovers at airports around town while participating in multiple parade events throughout year.

The Denison community began as a small settlement on the banks of the Red River in 1879 and grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s as a result of its location on railroad tracks and its role as an agricultural center. Today, Denison is one of the largest cities in Midland County with a population over 4,000. The Denison community was named for John Denton, an American settler who had arrived in 1851. Denton built his first home in what is now Denison in 1881 and developed it into a town that became known for its heavy industry - among them looms used to make cotton candy which became popular among local children. In 1915, Jock Mahoney founded Mahoney's Grapes & More Store which remains one of downtown Denison's most distinctive landmarks today. Mahoney also played an important role in developing Denion's economy by creating jobs within the local paper manufacturing industry which continues to play a significant role in the city today. In recent years DENISON has experienced steady decline due to reductions in population size (−2%) and no real change in economic conditions (+0%).
