The railroad arrived in the 1850s transporting goods and people eastward from San Antonio across the Rio Grande Valley. Del Rio is a city in Texas, located on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 153,711 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in and the county seat of Bexar County. Del Rio's history dates back to 1836, when it was founded as a trading post by Captain John Sutter. The name "Del Rio" means "place where the river forks." The original town was only a small village with about 60 residents. In 1849, James Bowie and his brothers founded Bowie City on an area now known as downtown Del Rio. The first post office opened in 1850 and named it for General Sam Houston. Bowie City grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of 4,000 people. By 1870, Bowie City had become one of the largest cotton cities in America and had two steamboats that carried goods upriver to market outlets. In 1876, Charles Goodnight purchased some land south of Bowie City from Jernigan & Co., which later became Goodnight State Bank. Goodnight began building what would become known as Goodnight Stadium; it was completed in 1879 and served as the home field for both Baylor University (now Baylor University Waco) football games and American Legion baseball games until 1922 when Texas A&M moved into College Station Stadium. In 1911, Hermann Hesse donated land north of downtown Del Rio to build what would become St Boniface Catholic School; its first school year started on September 15th, 1911. On February 17th 1912the school changed its name to Saint Boniface Academy after Father Augustus Kelly set up shop there providing education for girls starting with grades Pre-Kindergarten through Twelve years old free of charge under Catholic auspices within Our Lady Helping Hand Home Society program approved by United States Department Of Education….Saint Boniface Academy continued operations until 1971 when its property became part of current day NASA headquarters complex known as Johnson Space Center although some remnants still remain today including a beautiful Gothic styled belltower which serves today as StBoniface Chapel during Holy Week services……..Today downtown Del Rio continues to experience rapid growth with many new businesses opening up throughout town while historic buildings continue to be renovated or replaced…..
Del Rio was founded by the Tejas River people in 1836. The town became a center for cattle ranching, and its name is derived from the Spanish word "del Rio," meaning "the river." In 1912, Del Rio was annexed by Dallas.
