Del Rio is a city in Bexar County, Texas, United States. The population was 102,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The Del Rio River and its tributaries are located in the city. The first European to visit what is now Del Rio was Antonio de Nuevo who named it "New Spain" on November 3, 1519 after his landing on the Texas Coast on August 14 of that year. In 1836 Mexican General Santa Anna made an abortive attempt to retake New Spain from Texan forces under Ulysses S. Grant and Chiricahua Apache Chief Cochise negotiated a treaty ceding most of Alamo Hill east of the river to Texas with land grants for 1/4 mile (0.8 km) wide strips along each bank as well as alllying parcels beyond which no man could build without prior consent from US citizens living within three miles (5 km) of the river's mouth or any other point within Mexican territory lying west of True Creek about 10 miles (16 km) north-northwest of San Antonio, including present day Del Rio and all its tributaries except White Sands Bayou which flows into Buffalo Bayou just south of town limits In 1845 four years after Mexico’s fall An act was passed by Congress providing for “the adjustment and future management”of lands ceded by Mexico including present day Del Rio On December 6th 1846 George Washington Whitman became President Polk’s Assistant Secretary at War Dept., charged with organizing military operations near Big Bend National Park & Preserve in West Texas called Brazos Valley Campaign & making arrangements for Indian removal Rancho Frio de la Vega became property belonging to US Government & later acquired by Adolphus Busch who built an oil refinery there Wagon Wheel Hotel opened in 1862 on Plaza de Armas opposite RR tracks at junction where Mockingbird Rd makes access into town Limits The City Council erected a $2,500 wooden tower known as The Tower in 1865 to serve as their first municipal building In 1865 saw construction begin on what would become one of Dallas' most infamous buildings – Sam Houston Hall – designed by architect John Houstoun Completed in 1868 it served as both a courthouse and state capitol until being destroyed by fire in 1901 . As Dallas grew larger The Hall gained more importance becoming home to most government services before finally being demolished following Hurricane Harvey damage in 2017 . In its place stands Commerce Street Station serving Amtrak rail passengers until they reach downtown Dallas

The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century and into the 20th century, thanks to its status as a commercial center for cattle and oil production. The population reached 100,000 by 1931. However, economic decline in the late 21st century led to decreases in population and jobs throughout Del Rio. Today, only a few hundred people live in Del Rio proper while most of its businesses have closed or relocated elsewhere.
