Del Rio, Texas is a small town in the Midwestern United States. It is located on the banks of the Colorado River, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Austin and 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of Dallas. The population was 7,651 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1849 by colonists from New Mexico. The name means "borderland" in Spanish. The first post office in Del Rio opened in 1853. In 1870, a group of Texans who were dissatisfied with their governor's policies moved to Del Rio to form a new government. The first store and blacksmith shop were built there. Del Rio became an agricultural center after settlers learned how to grow corn, cotton, wheat and other crops here.
