The history of the Army in Del Rio, Texas can be traced back to 1861. The city was founded by the Spanish in 1837 and the first settlers were Mexican Americans who came to the area in search of land. In 1851, a group of Anglo-Americans came to Del Rio and organized a Rifle Club. The club met monthly at a hotel and began shooting off salvos from a short distance away from town. It is said that this event helped launch the city’s military tradition. In 1862, during the American Civil War, General Sam Houston commissioned Colonel James Hogg to build an army battery in downtown Del Rio. The battery was named for General Houston and it became one of the largest artillery batteries in Texas. Over time, other units were raised inDel Rio and throughout the state for service during the Civil War. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all Confederate forces within Texans’ borders to disbanded or surrender unconditionally on May 6th. As part of this order, General Hogg received word that his unit had been canceled and he returned home without honors. In 1871, after years of preparation, Govt.'s Executive Order No 9 established an Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) near Del Rio as part of an effort to promote agriculture across Texas A&M University (TAMU). This commission also authorized purchase of 640 acres adjacent to TAMU campus for use as a research station; this area would eventually become known as Research Park #1 (RP1). On October 1st 1913., TMU students completed their first year at RP1 when they erected a wooden frame building which served as their library until 1950 when it was replaced by its current facility; today's Annex Building is located on RP1 Campus . Research Park #2 opened in 1915 with additional acreage purchased adjoining TAMU campus; today's portion includes Research Park #3(RP3), which includes FM 925 & FM 1230 . Army personnel stationed here included: On November 7th 1914,, Lt Col Charles Ewing arrived from San Antonio de Bexar County Mission Viejo with orders to take commandant position at El Paso Barracks replacing Capt Henry Wolkowitz who resigned due to ill health Lt Col George Pemberton arrived on December 15th with orders tp take commandant position at Corpus Christi Barracks replace Capt Charles Fenton who resigned due to ill health Lt Col John Tatum arrived on January 3rd 1915 with orders tp take commandant post at Odessa Barracks replace Capt John Coyle who resigned due t o illness

Del Rio, Texas is a city in Big Bend County, Texas, United States. The population was 194 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Big Bend County. The name "Del Rio" comes from a Spanish word meaning "the Rio Grande." The city was founded by mischievous children of Mexican immigrants who named it after their rancho (ranch) in Nuevo Leon County, Mexico. A post office called Del Rio (now part of El Paso) was established in 1873 and served until 1900. In 1907 the town of Del Rio merged with nearby Laredo to form one municipality. In 1911 the U.S. Census counted 1,845 people in Del Rio; however, this number increased to 3,612 by 1920 because of agricultural expansion and new industry development within and outside the city limits including oil production on land leased from Apache Oil Company Limited Partnership. The population peaked at 10,584 during World War II when more than 60% of residents were soldiers or marines stationed in California or elsewhere on military posts around Texas as part of the war effort; however by 1950 only 13% remained within city limits while over 80% lived outside its boundaries within Big Bend County. Most present day factories and businesses along I-10 east of downtown were built during this time period such as Alcoa aluminum smelters (1948), Ford Motor Company research laboratory (1955), Dow Chemical Company's Patton plant (1951), Texaco Refinery (1970s), ChevronTexaco Refinery Complex 1984–1997 (Marathon Valley Export Terminal complex). Population decline began following 9/11 although remnants can still be seen today inside City Limits near 11th Street NW and Interstate 10 Westgate which includes numerous small retailers that are not traditionally found near major shopping areas due to zoning regulations put into place primarily for commercial reasons rather than residential values annexed onto these properties subsequent to9/11 even though many have since closed down or converted to residential uses due to lack of surrounding retail options typically found near industrial areas having high density housing developments located adjacent thereto typically consisting predominantly single family residences with few other businesses providing significant economic activity residents remaining confined withincity limits despite recent prohibition ordinances enacted againstEncouraging conversionofresidentialpropertiestoindustrialuseslargely pursuanttopoliciesintendedtobetweencityandcounty government

Del Rio is a city in Texas, and the seat of McAllen County. The population was 281,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico. The original name for Del Rio was "Brazos de la Ribera" (BRZ - "Rivers of the Ridge"). In 1836, two years after Texas became an independent republic, Mexican officials renamed it Ciudad Victoria (CYD - "Victoria"). A few months later, Mexican General Antonio López Santa Anna razed all of Ciudad Victoria except for its walls and gates to create the new town of Del Rio. On July 6, 1837, Governor Mirabeau Bexar approved a charter for Del Rio City and set aside land within it to build a fortifications against possible Indian invasions. Texas Rangers were organized in 1839 and 1840 to protect settlers in what is now McAllen County. By 1842, there were over 1,000 Rangers stationed throughout this newly formed state including around Del Rio where they guardedlying portages leading into Lake Texoma and surrounding hills. This hostility between Anglo-American settlers and Native American Indians led to several raids by Kiowa and Comanche warriors during this time period that resulted in many casualties on both sides. In 1861-1862 Confederate forces invaded Texas under General Robert Ewing with aspirations of overthrowing Ulysses S Grant's Union regime in America. Three days after Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, Confederate Brigadier General James Longstreet ordered his units into central Texas to attack Houston from its north side using San Jacinto River as their main artery each crossing at New Braunfels Bridge near present day Del Rio; however due to low water levels across the river these crossings failed catastrophically resulting in heavy losses for Confederate troops on both banks with most men stranded below upon reaching Houston; eventually surrendering on September 15th 1862 just outside of town limits following intense Union artillery bombardment which destroyed most bridges within town limits rendering access impassable any longer even for cavalry or artillery units supported by infantry unit withdrawing back upriver towards New Braunfels Bridge). The first post office opened at Del Rio on November 11th 1850s; however mail service ceased operations due to railroad construction through McAllen County concurrent with the nation's civil war begining soon afterwards & continued until 1865 when all mail routes were rerouted thru Dallas-. The first schoolhouse opened in 1895 & remained open until 1959 when it was replaced by a larger school building which still stands today as part of University Park Elementary School District #2 south east corner lot next door to correlative Baylor High School #1 west side lot also used by UTEP football practices & other school activities currently occupy site formerly occupied by First Baptist Church built about 1930 originally serving as a church/temporary jail prior To That Time only one house stood vacant inside city limits prior To That Time only one business existed inside city Limits Prior To That Time
