Crowley, Texas is located in Gregg County and was founded in 1867. The town grew up around the Crowley Coal Company and the Crowley Hotel. The coal mines closed in the early 1920s, but the town kept growing. In the 1930s, it became a center for cattle ranching and agriculture. The 1940 census counted 1,811 people in Crowley; by 1950, that number had grown to 4,064. In 1960, local officials decided to change their name to Dallas-Fort Worth after World War II merger of American cities with Dallas-Fort Worth as their new capital city. Crowley, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Williamson County and has a population of 14,822 as of the 2010 census. The name "Crowley" comes from nearby Crowley's Creek. The community was founded on November 3, 1881 by Edward A. Crowley and his brother-in-law George Ladd. They named it after John Broughton Crowley who had been killed in an Indian attack two years earlier. In 1886, local cattle ranchers began to sell hay to settlers in neighboring Haskell County. One settler, Amos Beeton, bought 10 acres (40 hectares) of land at the edge of town for $1 per acre (0.50 per sq mi). He donated the land to the town for use as pastureland and built a small cabin thereon known as the "Beeton Cabin". The first school in Crowleysville was built on this site in 1888. In 1893, Cyrus Hixon opened a store and post office in what is now Crowleysville. Later that year he married Alice Keyes and moved into his own home which he used as a tavern until 1903 when he sold it to Wm Ladd for $4 per day to become the first business owner in Crowleysville proper. In 1916 William Ladd erected a new courthouse which served as both court house and jail until its demolition in 1972; however, much of its original construction still remains visible today inside the building’s walls! In 1919 Methodist Episcopal Bishop Arthur Prescott consecrated ground near present day Roosevelt High School where services were initially conducted before moving across Clinton Street to what is now First Baptist Church south side during 1922-1924; later dual service church became First Presbyterian Church which remains operational today with services celebrated weekly on Saturday mornings since 1951! On September 11th 1906 Harry Sweeny donated five shotguns worth $5 each from his ranch at Box Elder Mesa into town coffers for use by farmers markets throughout Williamson County; market operated successfully every week until 1952! With increasing demand for goods available only from afar due to World War I shortages caused by Austria annexing Czechoslovakia all businesses closed their doors but one such exception being Harry Sweeny’s shotgun dealership which continued operations successfully during WWI moratorium while other stores closed because they could not compete against high prices charged by Austrian gunmakers! After WWII many residents left Williamson County including most notably Harry Sweeny who sold property & assets back East then relocated permanently To Florida but died there leaving wife Ruth & 4 children behind along with livestock including horse corrals & chicken coops ! Post Office closed 1992 also becoming final stop for mail before truck drives out onto IH-10 just outside Nacogdoches TX
Crowley, Texas was founded by Levi Coffin in 1849. The town was named after General James K. Polk and the county seat of Crowley County. In 1907, Crowley was added to the TX state census as a community within Travis County.
