The Air Force deployed a gift to Corsicana residents in 1938. The gift was an airplane and the first time the service flew into Corsicana was on July 8, 1938. At that time, the airfield at Corsicana Army Air Field was only one runway and there were no buildings other than hangars. In 1940, the airfield became operational with two runways and a hangar capacity of seventy-six aircraft. A new barracks was built on the north side of the airport in 1941 and an auxiliary airstrip was added to the west side in 1945. In 1957, all three runways were replaced by six additional parallel asphalt Runway 23L/21R which served as a closed loop for community events such as dances and rallies. In 1961, a maintenance hangar addition was constructed on the east side of runway 23L/21R which served as home to both Aeronautical Systems Services Squadron (AASS) 1 (later known as Eglin AFB) and Aerospace Science Directorate Headquarters (ASDHQ). On December 16, 1967, Corsicana Airport celebrated its centennial with festivities including concerts by local performers at Municipal Auditorium followed by a parade through downtown streets ending at City Hall where refreshments were provided by city officials before flight demonstrations from Aeronautical Systems Squadron 703 (later Eglin AFB) over White Sands Missile Range ended proceedings. On January 4th 1969, Aero America Airlines Flight 497 crashed into Clear Creek River just prior to takeoff from Corsicana Airport after being diverted due to weather conditions; all five aboard died instantly. The crash remains unsolved to this day however it is commonly believed that either pilot error or terrorism may have been responsible for their loss.

Today’s KC-135 Stratotanker provides aerial refueling capabilities for Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules airlifters which providelift capability for Army infantry battalions across Iraq and Afghanistan while also supporting Navy SEAL activity ashore on Naval Base Pearl Harbor Hawaii; Provide vital combat airlift support for Marine Expeditionary Units conducting amphibious assaults; Serve as primary airborne delivery system for Joint Task Force - Hammer (CENTCOM) strike operations against terrorist targets worldwide; And more! With its unique configuration and design – including two Pratt & Whitney JT8D engines each producing 6500 lbsp – the KC-135 is one of only a few airplanes ever designed specifically for strategic bombardment missions!
