The Corpus Christi Naval Ship Museum has a rich naval history that can be traced back to the early days of the Texas Navy. The ship museum is home to USS Constitution (1851-1855), USS Brooklyn (1861-1865) and USS Preble (1912). USS Constitution was one of the first warships in Texas when it arrived in 1851. She served as flagship of Commodore John C. Frémont’s squadron during the Mexican-American War, and played an important role in striking at Mexico’s San Antonio Bay. After battles at Buena Vista and Monterrey, she reached Corpus Christi on October 25, 1853, after more than two years of hard campaigning. USS Brooklyn was commissioned into the Texas Navy on November 9, 1861. She served as flagship of Commodore James Fenton’s division during the American Civil War, participated in engagements at Norfolk Island, Hampton Roads and Cape Hatteras while blockading North Carolina ports. On July 17th 1865 she sailed from Norfolk for Mobile with forces destined for General Butler’s intervention in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. However, Confederate forces attacked her off Mobile on September 12th and she put into port for repairs before sailing again three weeks later underdueled by CSS Alabama off New Orleans Harbor. On December 8th 1865 Constitution made rendezvous with HMS Erebus off Beaumont Point Light; but upon boarding found that her captain had been killed and his vessel taken over by rebels! Corpus Christi, Texas is the largest city in Llano County and the seat of Austin. The city was founded on May 25, 1836 by the Central Texas Company as a trade center for cattle and cotton. The city became an important agricultural center during the 19th century with its growing population of farmers and their horses, buggies and wagons. Corpus Christi was designated a UNESCO City of Design in 1984. In 2010, it hosted the World Expo pavilion. The first settlers to live in what is now Corpus Christi were Spanish-speaking Texans who arrived from California in 1821. They built small huts near present-day downtown while they awaited permission from Mexican authorities to build a settlement. On July 24, 1836, Mexico granted independence to Texas and elected Houston as its first president. However, Houston did not have authority over Corpus Christi until he issued an executive order on October 3 that created the Texas Rangers to enforce Anglo law in the area. The Rangers began raids into Mexican territory and killed many people as they tried to protect Anglo settlers from Indian attacks. By 1837, most of the Spanish-speaking Texans had moved away from Corpus Christi because of Indian attacks and political instability back home at home. On December 12, 1840, John Sitton purchased land south of town from José Antonio Carrillo for $1 per acre (approximately $ ). Sitton renamed his new community "Corpus Christi" after Stations of Christopher (or Santa Cruz) which he thought would represent religious tolerance among all people living thereabouts. At this time San Francisco Bay was just starting to open up so sea travel was difficult; consequently sailing ships visited Corpus Christi only once every three years or so due to bad weather conditions at that time). Although early residents did obtain passage on these trips they are generally considered claustrophobic by modern standards given today's easyJet connections! Sitton's enterprise failed but demonstrated how viable it could be for wealthy Europeans to settle near American ports without fear of retaliation by Native Americans should such activities become public knowledge back then! Unfortunately this experiment ended very badly indeed when several Guadalupe Islanders were captured by local ranch hands near present day Mission Point late one night around 1830s following their ill-advised attack on two white surveyors; thus embarrassing James Bowie & Co., owners/ managers of Rancho El Cimarrón [Palo Alto] -one mile eastward thereof -onJanuary 10th 1830". It is interesting that even though no one was hurt any permanent way ensuing events led directly thereto including some rather large grants being made subsequently thereto vis-à-vis Rancho El Cimarrón!! Thus such episodes serve as another reminder about just how fragilecolonial power really can remain especially if not carefully managed !! If we look at today’s events through historical perspective things do look quite different however there are still some lessons learned albeit few changes have been made actually!!!
