Corpus Christi, Texas is a city in US state of Texas. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 250 miles (402 km) southwest of Dallas and 640 miles (1,152 km) east of Houston. The population was 1,319 in 2010. The name comes from the Spanish word "Corpus Christi" meaning "body of Christ." Santa Anna retreated back down the coast to Houston butTexan forces under Sam Houston pursued Micheltorena until he joined Mexican General Agustín Carranza at San Fernando de Padua on November 12th 1836 where they surrendered and Mexican troops burned down Mexico City. In 1865 volunteer soldiers from New York County began arriving after fighting for Confederate general John Custer during the American Civil War. By 1870 there were over 2,000 people living in Corpus Christi when it became an incorporated community with a Board of Commissioners formed that year by wealthy northerners looking to create a new town near their plantations in East Texas without having to worry about slavery issues. They named their new town Corpus Christi Bay because it lay just beyond their bayou limits on the Gulf Coast and would be accessible only by boat or raft usingnavigation available then only through Cape St Vincent which lies seven miles (11 km) north-northwest of CorpusChristi.
