Corpus Christi is a city in the Texas Panhandle, within the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The population was 1,351 at the 2010 census, up from 912 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Ft Worth metropolitan area. The site where Corpus Christi now stands was once a small fishing village on the banks of the Trinity River. A contingent of Spanish soldiers under Governor Velázquez de Ayala built Fort San Carlos de Allende on what is now said to be one of the most beautiful sites in Texas for military purposes in 1736. After some clashes Bragg withdrew without accomplishing anything; however Ewell advanced deeper into Houston and finally reached Montrose Bridge just south of downtown Houston , where he mounted an attack against Union positions killing many Americans before withdrawing across Buffalo Bayou towards Montgomery County Courthouse with orders not to enterHouston again until further notice On December 12th 1865 ConfederateGeneral Robert Ewell attacked USPositions aroundMontrose Bridge resulting in hundreds killed& captured including Brigadier General Braxton Bragg
