Corpus Christi was founded on April 4, 1845 by Spanish Jesuits and Missionaries from Mexico City. It became an American port town with heavy cotton production during the Civil War and developed into a commercial center for shipbuilding and fishing following Reconstruction. The oil industry soon became dominant, leading to redevelopment that has made Corpus Christi one of the most expensive cities to live in in America.
Corpus Christi, Texas was founded on April 6, 1835 by the Spanish colonists as the Acre colony. The town was named for Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. The original population of Corpus Christi consisted of about 400 people. In 1836, the Mexican government announced that it would take over all American land west of the Rio Grande and so Mexico ceded control to the United States. The first post office opened in Corpus Christi on October 15, 1836. On January 12, 1840, a convention was held at Corpus Christi to decide how to name the new community after saint Christopher (Christopher Columbus). The chosen name was "Corpus Christi" which means "Church of Jesus Christ." The first school in CorpusChristi was built on Second Street near what is now its downtown square. A second school was built on Third Street in 1842 and became known as Harper’s Hope School from 1850 to 1860. A third school called “Queen’s Hill” opened in 1865 and soon became known as Whitney High School because it had the largest gymnasium in Texas at that time. In 1870, a fourth high schoolopened which became known as Clarendon High School after Senate President John Fenton Clarendon who donated $100,000 toward its construction. In 1903-1904 an addition to Whitney High Schoolwas made which housed a gymnasium and classroom building named “Elkhorn” after Elkhorn Ranch north of town where many Anglo-Mexican ranchers lived while their crops were being grown south of town near what is now IH-10 freeway exit 277A. There were also two small schools – one called “Pine View” and another called “Meadowbrook” – within walking distance of each other but these schools did not survive into the 21st century due to changing public attitudes about education outside urban areas during this time period
