The Corpus Christi Army National Guard's history stretches back to 1917, when the unit was organized as a Volunteer Infantry Regiment. In 1919, it was redesignated the 1st Texas Infantry and served in World War II as part of the United States Sixth Army. The Guard saw combat in Europe and North Africa, before being disbanded in 1945. In 1951, the Guard was re-activated as a Reserve battalion and assigned to District XI of the Texas Department of Defense. It joined the active military after Operation Neptune's Spear and served in Vietnam as an infantry regiment with elements attached to Regular Army units. Afterward, it returned home and resumed its role as a Reserve battalion until 1971 when it became an independent unit again under the command of District XI. From 1978 through 1984, the Guard also served as an instructor at San Antonio Military Academy before becoming an operations arm forDistrict XII. Today, Corpus ChristiArmy National Guard units are deployed throughout Southwestern USA on numerous missions including training security forces for local events such as parades or political rallies; providing support during natural disasters suchas hurricanes or earthquakes; acting as escorts for dignitaries or visiting troops overseas; guarding Federal buildings; or providing backup services duringTexaco Stadium Super Bowl games. Corpus Christi, Texas is a city in the US state of Texas. The population was 10,787 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Beaumont-Port Arthur and its surrounding counties. Corpus Christi was founded by Spanish colonists in 1718 as a small trading post on an island in Galveston Bay. The original name of the island was La Isla de la Concepcion (Island of Conception). The city's present name comes from Spanish General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who named it Santiago del Carrera after his birthplace, Santiañez de los Ríos, Spain. As part of its history and economy, Corpus Christi has been home to many Fortune 500 companies including Shell and ExxonMobil. In 2004 it became one of the first cities in America to have completely separated from Harris County government control with creation of its own mayor and City Councilmember system The original settlements within what is now Corpus Christi were primarily fishing villages that grew up around points of access to Galveston Bay for sailors operating outfitter schooners or brigboats known as "catamarans." These villages included Pointz Padre (later renamed Bahía de la Concepción), Brazoria River Village, Marina Village, San Jacinto Island Settlement and Sabine Island Landing. From these early settlements Basque fishermen began harvesting sea bass and other fish which they would then sell fresh or frozen into patties or churros called calzones (little balls) at markets across Galveston County. Salt mining operations also began near Pointz Padre during this time frame; lead ore was processed into bricks at New Mexico Lead & Brass Company before being exported to Europe through Porto Rico until 1859 when Galveston merchants got their hands on some 5 million dollars worth of lead bullion stored at Pueblo del Rio Mexican National Bank on Guadalupe Heights east of downtown Houston! Pueblo del Rio management leased land on Guadalupe Heights for manufacturing purposes starting in 1876 but soon sold all interests in the facility toHouston Bauxite Company making Corpus Christi an official bauxite town! By 1898 all vestiges of active salt mining had disappeared leaving only quarries remaining today! During World War II both USS Missouri (1941) and USS Lexington (1942) lay down mines off Corpus Christi while USS Ranger patrolled off shore against Japanese submarines operating out Ofishima Harbor; Ranger’s proximity caused severe tidal flooding along the shoreline which led to over 100 dead seagulls washing ashore throughout December 1941 !! After Japan surrendered MacArthur ordered his Headquarters Naval Forces Asia headquartered aboard USS Arizona(1945) located just southof CorpusChristiBaywatch beach fronting Sabine Isleand Pharr Islandsto monitor postwar Japanese activities there!!
