The Corinth area has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to arrive in the area were Spanish traders who landed in what is now Corinth on November 15, 1795. The town was founded as a trading post on the Brazos River, and it became an important trade center during the 1800s. In 1836, Corinth was incorporated as a municipality, and it remained an important community until the late 19th century. During the American Civil War, Corinth sided with the Confederacy and was burned by Union forces in 1862. After the war, Corinth became a ghost town and values its historical importance have declined over time. Today, there are few physical reminders of its past except for some remains of buildings that date back to before 1861. The history of Corinth began with human beings who first settled here around 7500 BC. Over time, these people developed various civilizations including the Aztec Empire which controlled much of central Mexico during this time period; however, no evidence exists to support any claims that Aztec settlers ever arrived in Texas specifically or even nearby at Corinth. It is likely that instead groups of Native Americans from other parts of North America (perhaps from northern Canada) traveled downriver along the Brazos River and invaded what is now Texas sometime between 1000 BC and 2000 AD when they encountered new land which lay beyond their previous homeland (the Great Lakes region).
