Copperas Cove is a small town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,487 at the 2010 census. Copperas Cove coffee has been grown and roasted here since the early 1800s. The first coffee beans were ground and roasted on the site of present-day Copperas Cove Elementary School. In 1902, a group of men from nearby Carthage founded the Carthage Coffee Company to grow and roast their own coffee. The early Dutch settlers in what is now McLennan County were mostly farmers who grew corn and other vegetables. They did not have access to either potable water or coffee beans so they turned to Native Americans for help with this important commodity. One account says that when the Dutch people found out about Indians growing coffee they offered them land in exchange for it; however, the Indians refused because they wanted to keep their own resources for themselves. Eventually, some European colonists arrived in search of new land and started trading with the Native Americans around what is now Copperas Cove. By 1802, there were at least 10 Europeans living in Copperas Cove; most likely more because many ships came through that area looking for oil wells during this time period (see History of McLennan County). One of these traders was Captain John Smith who traded goods with native tribes all over North America during this time frame including copper ore from Mexico City as well as tobacco and other items (Smithsonian National Museum p 27). In 1802, two Englishmen named George Stephenson and Robert Stephenson set off on a journey across Britain to find an opening into Canada that would lead to rich deposits of coal and gold near Montreal (Lincolnshire Regiment Museum website). Unfortunately for the Englishmen, they did not make it very far south before falling victim to hostile natives called The Aboriginals who had been Watching them from atop a hill! This event is still commemorated by a monument located near where they fell (Norman Rockwell painting). Aftermath: After reaching Montreal, Stephenson’s party discovered vast amounts of coal but no money could be extracted from it so he abandoned his plans for riches within months! Robert Stephenson continued his explorations until 1814 when he reached Winnipeg after spending more than three years travelling through North America Railway Province [Wikipedia]. With little success encountered along his route back home England decided that another route must be taken - via Alaska! The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census.[1] Copperas Cove is part of the Brownsville-Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants in what is now Copperas Cove were Native Americans who hunted and gathered shellfish off the coast. A Spanish trader, Manuel de Armas y Costilla, discovered copper here in 1796 while sailing from Havana to Galveston with supplies for Santa Anna's army during their Mexican War campaign against Mexico. In 1827, Antonio López de Santa Anna founded San José del Cabo—the first Spanish settlement on this side of the gulf—near present day Copperas Cove. Dutchman Cornelis Hendricksz established a trading post at Point Isabel near present day Harlingen in 1829, later moving his headquarters to Point Isabel proper and becoming known as "Hendricks Bay". Dutchman Nicholas van den Heuvel moved his post to an island east of Point Isabel in 1830 and called it New Amsterdam after himself and his father-in-law Hendrick Hudson (1668–1737). When Texas became part of the United States on April 29, 1845, much of its west central area was still under Mexican rule because President James Kenedy had refused to recognize America's independent government until General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna could be extradited from Mexico City for treason charges connection with that war effort. On July 6,1845,[2] American forces invaded Bexar County along with troops from New Mexico under Colonel John Fenton[3], and began routing Mexican forces throughout most or all of Texan territory northward into Indian Territory where they were eventually defeated by US troops at Palo Alto on November 16th,[4] effectively ending anyMexican resistance westward beyond Bexar County boundaries. A new era began when Captain George Waddell landed his boatload of Brazos Indians at Copperas Cove on February 3rd 1840 pursuant to an agreement made between Governor Alfred Prentice[5] and then-Majors Beaumont and Bowie regarding land grants for native people living within pending treaties negotiated at Fort Bridger sixty miles (100 km) upstream including those now located within Harlingen Municipality limits: seventy five acres (249 m2) given to Lieutenant Samuel Smith; another fifty acres (~245 m2) given as additional land grant by Mr. Murchison & Mrss., corner piers extending into said river bottom just above Quitman channel; hereinwith 5 acres [50 ha][6]), bounded northwest by highlands lying upon quitman creek & southwesterly by Navarro county line; thence easterly 7 leagues [13 km][7], through Interlake country etc., over highlands reaching Ft Worth 2½ hours before sunrise or shortly thereafter - thence common road leading due south 1¼ hours - copperascove
