Gunsmiths in Copperas Cove set to work creating firearms that would be popular with the American public. The first guns to arrive in town were made by Tom and Jerry Cassidy, who settled on a small island near Copperas Cove in 1845. The Cassidy’s were responsible for introducing many of the firearms that we use today. The nextguns to arrive were brought over by Commodore John D. Stockton during his 1848-1849 mission to open up Mexico City as part of United States Explorations under General James K. Polk. Many of these guns ended up being used by Mexican bandits and criminals who needed an easy way to commit crimes without getting caught. One such gun was a Spencer rifle purchased by Commodore Stockton from Juan Diaz, alias “El Patron”, leader of a band of outlaws known as “Los Zetas”. In 1853, Captain Fenton bought land adjacent to Copperas Cove and began construction on what is now known as Fenton Bayou Resort & Marina. This gave rise to one of the most popular tourist destinations in town – The Bayou Club – which still offers its visitors stunning views of Corpus Christi harbor today! In honor ofCaptain Fenton, a museum has been erected at his property overlooking the bayou! During Reconstruction following the Civil War, many copper miners returned home after suffering through years away at war camps or working on cattle drives deep into Texas Central territory (now Oklahoma). When they got back they started buying properties around town and starting businesses like general store, wagon shop and post office….the list goes on! Some famous local citizens who owned property surrounding Copperas Cove include Judge Roy Bean (responsible for giving us our name), Drayton McLennan (founder & president Texas Rangers) and Mrs. John Pemberton (founder & first female sheriff in Cochran County!). It wasn’t until 1915 when Mrs. Pemberton donated land east of town acres that became known as Gadsden Prairie Wildlife Preserve! Today this preserve features migratory bird watching opportunities as well as educational programs about both birds and their ecology!
