By 1902, Copperas Cove had a population of around 1,500 people and was one of the largest towns in Texas. During World War II, Copperas Cove served as an important military base because it was located close to Fort Stockton and Naval Base Corpus Christi. In 1952, the town merged with nearby Baytown to form the new City of Corpus Christis. Today, Copperas Cove is home to a small community of retirees living near Interstate 10 and Nueces Bayou.
