Coppell is a small town in Ellis County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1876 by Englishmen who had come to Texas during the American Civil War as soldiers. The name "Coppell" comes from an early settler, David Coppell, and his wife Eliza (née Welsh). A post office was established in Coppell in 1877, and remained open until 1925. The first store opened in Coppell on Main Street. In 1901 the first church services were held there. In 1915 a mill complex was built northwest of town to process cottonseed oil for export; it closed in 1951. The community experienced other industrial setbacks over the years: In 1950 a cooperative grocery store and newsstand were opened; but this failed within two years because of high competition from bigger stores nearby. A new shopping mall called "The Crossing" was developed east of town around 1984-85; it became successful enough to be re-developed as an independently owned shopping center that still operates today under that name (). However, much of what made "The Crossing" popular – such as its large outdoor seating areas and wide variety of shops – has been lost in time or worn out by neglect since then. In recent years crime rates have increased around town due to its close proximity to Austin and its increased use as a bedroom community for Austin commuters. Coppell is a town in Ellis County, Texas, United States. The population was 794 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Coppell were farmers who arrived from Illinois in 1836 and named their new community after Colonel Edwin H. Coppee, a friend of their leader James Bowie. By 1840, the town had a Presbyterian church, schoolhouse, and cannonball factory. A post office was established in 1844 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1914. In 1849, General Sam Houston decided to build the Whitestone Road (later State Highway 6) through eastern Ellis County to connect with Austin and make commerce easier for traders coming into the area. The town of Coppell benefited from this road development; many businesses were built on current Main Street such as Wacoal & Company stores which continued to operate until they closed around 1980s when they moved to Plano. In 1880, John Tilton organized the Cottonseed Oil Aggregates Association which grew into one of Texas' leading farming families during that decade with holdings that included land near present day McKinney and Commerce City. Tilton also founded local schools including Baylor University's Minton School campus which opened its doors in 1893 as Baylor-Minton School after being donated by his wife Alma Minton Johnston Tilton COppell High School football coach
