Coppell, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas located in Midland County. The population was 1,716 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area and is the county seat of Midland County. The name "Coppell" comes from Old Spanish term "capullo," meaning headlock or grip. The first European to come to Coppell was James Robertson who arrived in 1827 (). He built a cabin on what is now Westheimer Road () and named it after his home country, Scotland. A post office called Coppell was established in 1839, and remained in operation until 1907 (). In 1849, General Stephen Fayette Worth founded Worth's Ranch on present-day FM 2410 (), about southeast of Coppell east of US 59 (). Worth named his ranch for himself and donated it to the State of Texas in memory of his predecessor as Comanche Chief, Colfax Baylor Worth (1800-1848). In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down Lieutenant Colonel John Sibley's store northeast of Coppell while he was commanding an army detachment at Corinth (), Mississippi (); this event became known as the "First Battle of Corinth." In 1870, Adolphus Bechtel purchased land between present-day FM 2085 (now IH 35) and Loop 820 west of downtown Austin (). Bechtel named his ranch Bechtelville after himself and donated it to the State of Texas in memory of his father Rudolph Bechtel (1824-1900). From 1901 until 1957, all mail sent from Austin through Dallas went via Waco before being delivered by train to Fort Worth; however this service ended when US 66 opened up southward across TX 514 from Waco. In 1957, TX 514 became TX 134 when that highway was completed following UT 9th Street south from downtown Austin towards San Antonio. A new courthouse was authorized by legislation signed by Governor Connally on November 10, 1984 (). Construction began on October 16, 1987 (), with completion date set for December 15,. The $128 million courthouse has been designed by architect Sidney Coleman and features a barrel vaulted ceiling made out OF MDF boards with copper reinforcing ribs throughout; each rib supports an 8x8 meter glass skylight above which are recessed lightbulbs that provide artificial lighting within courtroom areas day and night; four levels underground parking garage will accommodate up to 150 cars.; additional floors were added during construction but have not yet been habitable because they are still under renovation; exterior walls were also reworked during construction including adding more than 2 meters (6 feet) worth Of planking featuring handrailings along both interior sides so pedestrians can cross without getting wet while inside courtrooms; courtrooms feature dark wood trim with gold accents complete with molding around window sills and doors while corridors contain cream trim with black accents.. The town continued to grow until the early 1920s when it experienced a significant decline in population due to World War I and the depression.
