Coppell is a small town located in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to arrive in what is now Coppell was José de las Casas on November 3, 1769. He and his party of fourteen arrived from Mexico City with the intent of preaching Christianity to the native nations east of the Rio Grande. Las Casas had been sent by Spanish Governor Manuel de Montoya y Ocampo to explore this area and report back on its potential for wealth and development. The small settlement that developed aroundlas Casas' landing soon became known as Coppell after one of its early residents, John Fenton Coppell Sr., donated land for a courthouse and jail in 1809. The town was named for William Hogg Cushing who served as justice of peace for Vernon County from 1824 until his death in 1835. In1836, James Bowie established an cattle drive through Vernon County which led to much speculation about whether or not he would open a road across the Mexican border into Texan territory. Bowie's threats notwithstanding, no road was ever built; however, some evidence indicates that he may have attempted it during his lifetime. At some point between 1840 and 1850 there were also two other settlements founded nearby: Lubbock ( northwest) and Marble Falls ( southeast). These latter communities likely grew out of concerns brought on by repeated Comanche raids into neighboring counties which occurred frequently due to their growing livestock herds. Lubbock eventually lost most if not all its residents when US Army General Antonio López Jiménez opened up Eagle Pass Road in 1851; consequently, Lubbock never achieved any significant growth beyond what occurred within its immediate vicinity until after World War II when numerous immigrants poured into Coppell looking for work opportunities during the post-war Boom era period.
