The Navy has been deploying gifts to Converse, Texas for more than a century. The gift tradition started in 1851 when Commodore John F. Stockton took command of the Texas navy and sent Gifts of Men and Vehicles to the town. In 1863, Commodore David Dixon donated a ship, the USS Johnston, to Converse as a goodwill gesture. The Naval Station at Corpus Christi was also founded in 1863 with the purchase of USS Johnston from Commodore Dixon. From then on, annual gifting campaigns were organized by Commodore Dixon’s successor Rear Admiral Samuel A. Washington. In 1924, Rear Admiral Harry Wohlgren transferred control of the Naval Station to the Army and began distributing Christmas gifts to Marines at Santa Anna Barracks in Converse. By 1941, all military members had their own quarters at Santa Anna Barracks and gifts were given out from there instead of from Commodore Dixon’s office downtown in Converse Plaza. In 1945, Marine Sergeant First Class Donny Jantz became known as “the Navy’s unofficial gift giver” because he distributed Christmas presents door-to-door throughout Corpus Christi during war years (1941-1945). Since that time until present day, naval personnel have continued sending gifts directly to their deployed friends and families stationed overseas through our local branch of Branche Services America Inc., or BSIA for short (www.bsiaonline.com). In 1954, George Ball opened what would become one of America's first drive-in movie theaters with his new theater complex at I-30 and Loop 410 East near present day FM 19606. Ball's drive-in soon became one of the most popular movie screens in North America with over 1 million admissions per week during its heyday between 1954 and 1957 alone! In 1984, ball sold his theater business to Gulf+Western Corporation for $10 million dollars making him one of the largest private owners of American movie theaters at that time! Today Gulf+Western Corporation operates two additional drive-ins -one on I-35 South near Arlington Heights IL and one near Springdale AZ - as well as numerous other theatres across North America under various names including Regal Entertainment Company (formerly Metroplex Entertainment), MCA Theatrical Properties International Inc., Palladium Films USA LLC., etc.? )

Converse, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. In 1859, Converse was founded on an old cotton plantation by Elisha Hargrave and his family. The town was named for General George Washington Converse, one of Hudspeth County's first settlers. In 1876, Converse became the county seat of Hudspeth County after it was moved from Overath to its present location. In 1907, the Texas Legislature designated the town as a county fairgrounds property. In 1912, local businessmen organized a "Cowboy Roundup" parade which attracted over 100 participants from all over Travis County to Converse limits that year. The town's commercial district developed into what is now called Old City Park (later renamed Main Street). This neighborhood includes many important historical buildings such as the First Baptist Church and courthouse dating back to 1860 and 1875 respectively. Other buildings in this district include several hotels and restaurants dating back to the early 20th century; among these are two notable Texaco gas stations - one on Main Street and one on Speedway Avenue - both built in 1923. Downtown Converse also contains several smaller businesses including antique stores and small grocery stores side by side with large department stores near Interstate 35 Frontage Road serving as retail anchors for downtownConverse today remains largely unchanged since 1910 although some homes have been replaced while others have been preserved or renovated
