Converse, Texas is a small town located in the southern part of Texas. The town was founded in 1881 by James Converse and his wife, Margaret. The couple named their new town after their two children, Charles and David. The Converse family had three children: James Converse Jr., Margaret Converse, and Johnnie Converse. In 1912, the family relocation to Amarillo because they could no longer support them all in Converse. There were only five residents living in the original community of 10 houses when it merged with Amarillo on July 1, 1912. With the addition of Amarillo’s population growth and improvements made to the area through annexation by Amarillo proper, including a school and a post office (the first being built there), the original community quickly became obsolete within a few years. However, some people still live in old homes that are still standing today in what is now known as “The District” on Main Street near Shields Avenue. Today, much like when it first came into existence, Converse is a small but vibrant community full of friendly people who share common interests such as music and fashion shopping at local boutiques or watching Football games at local stadiums thanks to its location within easy driving distance of major metropolitan areas like Dallas-Fort Worth or Houston-Clear Lake. On November 1, 1836, Converse was founded by John F. Kennedy and his brother-in-law James Buchanan Converse. The town was named for John F. Kennedy's older brother, Francis Converse. In 1870, the town had a population of just under 400 people and it became a cattle station with a post office. In 1907, the first school in the town opened and in 1912 the first hospital in the area opened. The town developed as a small community until it reached its current size in the mid-1980s when it annexed neighboring towns of Rocksprings and Two Rivers.
