Coffee was brought to the New World by Spanish explorers, and it wasn't until the 18th century that coffee began to be brewed commercially. In 1869, Converse Township was organized. The first settler in the township was John C. Kemp, who arrived in 1869 from Missouri. By 1870, there were seven families living in Converse Township. In 1872, the first school was built in Converse Township and classes were conducted by a few teachers. By 1875, there were twelve families living in the township and one school was being operated. In 1880, an addition to the original townsite was made and two lots were purchased for $1 each. The first store opened on this lot and Nameen & Son ran it until 1903 when they moved to Round Rock. The population of Converse Township peaked at twenty-one families in 1916 with a total of thirty-four residents; however, by 1930 the population had decreased to fifteen families and one school remained open throughout most of that decade due to lack of resources. The last resident died in 1941; however, the town still exists as a rural community today with a few homes scattered around its borders. In 1865 John Russel donated land for a Methodist church which would eventually become First Baptist Church of ConverseTexas . In 1901 First Baptist Church became United Methodist Church after merging with other denominations within Texas . Between 1915-1916 there was also construction on what is now known as Russel Park which served as an agriculturalenterprise park until it closed down due to high taxes during World War I . Converse took its name from General James Hogue (1814-1892), who fought during Mexican War against Mexico and then served as commissioner of Indian affairs under President Ulysses S Grant (1865-1871). After his return from Mexico he settled near Comanche Creek where he founded Hogue County along with fellow settlers Samuel Beard (1824-1900) and James Aiken (1826-1920). From here they began developing many small towns across Texas including Haskell City (), Springdale (), Palestine () and later Hudspeth ().
The first people to live in Converse were the Comanches. The town was founded by the Kiowa in 1836. The townspeople built a fort and named it Fort Converse. In 1849, the Texas Rangers burned down the fort and killed all of the inhabitants.
