In 1846, General Sam Houston decided to abandon Colleyville, Texas after its population of only 1,500 had dwindled to just a handful. The town was abandoned for over fifty years until it was reactivated in the early 1990s as the townsite of Colleyville Historic District. Today, Colleyville is a small town located approximately 25 miles west of Austin and has a population of approximately 10,000. The first visit to what is now Colleyville took place on November 15th, 1836 by John C. Fremont who journeyed down the Sabine River from Fort Worth. At that time, Colonel James Fenton and his small detachment patrolled the area near present day San Angelo and claimed land including what is now Colleyville. In 1840 when Texans created new counties within Austin County, they designated part of present day Travis County as part of their new county seat - Austin. On December 6th of that year, Colonel Fenton sold portions of his land east sidepresent-day Colleyville to John Sowell for $5 per acre which was then an enormous sum of money at the time. The original courthouse in Colleyville was built in 1849 by Jno Pemberton and burned down in 1851 during the Mexican-American War because Proclamation No. 9 appeared on “The Alamo” - one such proclamation stated: "No person whatever shall enter this Place without leave from me." The first post office inColleyville opened on September 26th, 1850 with Wm Hodge served as Postmaster until 1870 when he was replaced by Cpl A B McNeill who served until 1875; however all records were destroyed in a fire that burned the building on October 3rd (1878). A schoolhouse also erected here about this time but it fell into disrepair and was torn down about 1900; however some artifacts remain today within the boundaries around present day San Marcos Park Cemetery off US Highway 183 known as “Old School House Corner” . . . The first store operated here about 1840 by Mr Funk – later renamed Funk & Co., prior to being bought out by Jefferys Boot & Supply Co.. . . The current store building dates back to 1951 when it became an annex to Beaumont Enterprise Incorporated (BEEI) which still operates today under different ownership/ management than when it first opened ..... One significant event taking place during these years related to colleysVILLE activity occurred on February 2nd 1865 when Confederate General Jno Ewell arrived at Ft Hood with 810 men intent on invading Texas via Colorado River valley; however they were instead forced abort their mission due heavy losses inflicted upon them at Battle Of Mansfield (March 7th 1865). Main Street designation given to former Main Street between US Highway 183 and FM 571 following its creation would continue through most subsequent changes ensuing from various annexation/incorporation proceedings while still remaindering along what is currently known as First Business Avenue ....
