Colleyville is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,701 at the 2010 census. The original Colleyville was founded by settlers from Kentucky in 1847. It was named for General James Wilkinson Colley, who led the Union army in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Representative from Virginia. The town became an independent county in 1907 and eventually incorporated as a city in 1923. The first permanent settler in what is now Colleyville was Wm Hodge, who arrived there with his family on March 9, 1847. In 1848, John Fenton arrived with his family and began to grow corn and wheat near what is now First Street and Magnolia Avenue; he also built a small log cabin there which still stands today. A year later Alexander McMurtry arrived with his family and started to raise cattle on the east side of town west of Dutch Bros Creek (now part of Loop 610). By 1850, both Hodge families had left for good because of difficulties finding water to irrigate their crops; however, they continued to visit each other regularly until Wm Hodge's death in 1862 when his wife Elizabeth moved back into Colleyville with their two young children William and MaryAnn (known locally as Mrs. McAllister). In 1862 Colonel John Sibley purchased land east of English Fork from Daniel Boone II for $1 per acre ($2700 at current prices). He established himself along Sibley Road about two miles northeast of present day Colleyville proper about where Haskell Road meets FM 620.. Sibley's home can still be seen standing on this property line just north of FM 620 between Haskell Rd./FM 2716 & TR 288/US 281; it is currently used as an office building by Midland County government according to Google Maps . At this time there were only five or six families living within walking distance of Colonel Sibley’s new homestead – all except one that moved away within a few years: early resident James Denton bought some 160 acres (6 km2) adjacent to Colonel Sibley’s farmstead around 1870 but never lived there due to relations problems with him over farming privileges…Denton’s heirs sold most or all of the acreage around English Fork creek including those blocks south of I-10 & east off US 281 soon after World War II ended – making way for modern day downtown Colleyville One important event that took place during this time period was the annexation by Hudspeth County (later Travis County) of entiretyof Dallas Township adjoining Arlington Heights., including much eastern unincorporated territory lying within Travis County prior thereto .. This occurred on November 25th 1865 under terms provided therein by then Governor Isaac Nance .. On February 1st 1866 Genessee Vinton filed suit against Fort Worth et al claiming title to lands lying eastwardly following Elm Street through present day Parklawn Ruskhire inside limits hereinbefore annexed .. During 1865-1866 several disputes arose involving parcels claimed therein among various claimants - primarily those residing withinDallas Township southwesterly thereof.. Upon conclusion thereof Houston Pike (later US 290), abutting upon Elm Street just southeast of Parklawn Ruskhire formed an important artery linking Dallas Township northerly & Arlington Heights., thence southwestward via Houston Pike traversing Parklawn Ruskhire interior limits hereinbefore annexed forming another boundary line betweenHouston Township easterly & Arlington Heights…. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++During these years several streets were laid out through parts or all portions hereof including “First avenue” leading directly into downtown [sic] today! From October 1865 thru May 1886 Revd Mgr Jno Bicknell conducted services utilizing meeting house located northwest corner Main St.—just acrosscurrent site occupied today by Baptist church opposite State Dept Of Interior [the first post office], Masonic Lodge No 3 [the first courthouse], Masonic Temple No 3 etcetera…. One busy street during this timeperiod was Main Street running northerly parallel unto ElmStreet thru Parklawn Ruskire interior limits hereinbefore annexed becoming Broadway shortly thereafter
