The present-day Army National Guard is made up of more than 26,000 soldiers and civilians from across the country. The Colleyville National Guard was organized on October 1, 1866 as the 2nd Texas Infantry Regiment. It was mustered into service at Galveston on November 3 and served until disbanded on September 25, 1870. On February 20, 1908, the 2nd Texas Infantry Regiment was reorganized as the 36th state infantry regiment and mustered into service at Brownsville on March 4. It served until it was disbanded on July 10, 1918. In 1941, during World War II, the 36th state infantry regiment became known as Company K of the 5th Armored Division (United States). The unit fought in Normandy and Italy before being demobilized in 1945.

During World War I Colonel George Washington (known as “Gus”) Pemberton offered land for military training areas inside of Texas which led to many Texans coming north to fight for America during that conflict; among them were towns like Beaumont and San Antonio which attracted soldiers from all over America including those living near Corpus Christi Bayou where gunboats tied up as supplies arrived bringing troops home across the bayou from Fort Sam Houston at Warehouse Point on Galveston Island before sailing out into San Francisco Harbor
