There is no one definitive answer to this question, as coffee has undergone a variety of changes and modifications over the years. However, some of the earliest forms of coffee can be traced back to 6th century BC. Ancient Egyptians brewed a type of coffee that was called gourd coffee because its thick walls prevented it from rotting in the soil. Coffee beans were also ground into a paste and used as an additive in ancient Babylonian medicine. Coffee was first introduced to Europeans by Portuguese traders in the 15th century AD. They brought plants back with them, and began to cultivate them in their colonies in Asia Minor. In 1498, Angelo Martini, an Italian banker, traveled to Java and tasted what he called "the new world's best cup of coffee." He decided to bring this unique drink back home with him and started selling it under the name Arabica (later renamed Robusta). Beginning in 1500 AD, Arabs began growing coffee trees on Java for export. This led to the development of espresso – a smooth-tasting java made from ground beans boiled with water – which became popular across Europe during the 16th century. In 1795, Nicholas-Jacques Conte designed an early grinder that allowed for better extraction of flavor from Beans. In 1810–12, French chemist Jean-Baptiste Fournier developed roasting techniques that gave coffees their characteristic aroma and taste profile; these methods are still used today. The French Revolution stopped production at many factories due to lack of resources; however, some small businesses continued production until after World War II when quality control improved greatly. By 1960s standards, all coffees were roasted through use of high-pressure Roasters who remove all oils or fats before delivery; however note that this does not always reflect true Ethiopian or Guatemalan Coffees where mostof these processing takes place prior to roast>. Some blends are produced using both methods.<
