Air Force Base College Station, Texas is home to the United States Air Force Academy and is one of America's most important military installations. The base has a rich history that goes back to World War II. In 1942, during World War II, the United States Army seized airfield in College Station, Texas as part of an effort to gain control of the Rio Grande Valley. The airfield was soon renamed Travis Air Force Base and used by both the Army and Navy. In 1947, when Travis AFB was activated as a USAF installation, it becameone ofthe first USAF bases in the country. The base housed fighter pilots and their support personnel during the Cold War era. It also served as headquarters for Tactical Air Command (TAC) during this time period.
