The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) recognizes the naval history of Clute, Texas, as one of the most significant in the state. The town was founded in 1881 by Confederate soldiers who abandoned their posts on the Rio Grande during the Mexican-American War. The Navy Yard was built there in 1902 and became a major center for naval shipbuilding in Texas. In 1907, Clute was designated as a port city and began to develop into a commercial center. The town's growth led to an increase in military activity around it and its proximity to Corpus Christi made it an ideal location for launching operations during World War II. The town's harbor played an important role during both world wars and afterward; it remainsToday one of the busiest shipping points on the Texan coast. The NHHC credits Clute with being "the birthplace of air warfare" because its location at the mouth of San Antonio River allowed navy vessels to conduct aerial bombing raids against Japanese targets while they were vulnerable from landings. With that capability came increased risks for ships and sailors, which is why naval historian John Treadway has said that "Clute made sure every sailor had his own little horror story." In 1984, Clute residents voted to annex neighboring City of Brownsville after years of efforts by Mayor Donny Asbury. This action established Clute as an unincorporated community within Brownsville proper rather than outside its borders like it had been for many years before. In 2010, City Council decided not to pursue annexation again due to concerns about how well-integrated Clute would be into Brownsville's infrastructure and economy - similar concerns have been expressed about other annexed communities such as Mission Bend or League City since then. However, this does not mean that growth has stopped or that there are no plans for future development within or around Clute - recent projects include renovation work on local high school buildings, construction worker housing developments near US 281/I-10 eastbound lanes (developed by Nuevo Villano Development Company), new business park space west of US 281/I-10 southbound lanes (Developed by CIMCO USA Inc.), and a new marina just north of I-10 eastbound lanes ( Developed by Coastal Marine).

Clute was founded in 1884 by George Clute and his wife, Emma. The town was named for the creek that ran through it. George Clute had been a banker in Houston and decided to establish a cotton gin in Clute to help support his growing business. The first cotton gin in Clute was built on the east side of Main Street. It operated until 1903 when it was replaced by the present structure on First Avenue. Clute began to grow rapidly after its incorporation as a town in 1885. In 1889, the town completed construction of its first schoolhouse which soon became an important factor in the growth of the community. The first post office opened in 1893 and quickly became one of the most popular destinations for mail delivery from surrounding farms and towns. The arrival of railroads did not slow down the growth of Clute however, but rather helped increase commerce and services available to residents. In 1916, when railroad tracks were finally laid through town, much activity stopped as people realized how valuable this new transportation option would become. In 1920, when prohibitionist policies came into effect in America, many businesses closed their doors including those within Clutes boundaries-this caused some loss for local economy but ultimately boosted development within the community over time. By 1932, both banks had closed their doors and only two small stores remained active within town limits-one occupied by Ladd Chevrolet dealership and another managed by Mrs John Huggins (known locally as “Mama Hugginsâ€). However, both stores quickly grew larger with additional shelves being added throughout their building until they reached their current size today-marking an impressive milestone for this historical community! Today, Clutes vibrant commercial district is home to numerous businesses including several grocery stores as well as brick-and-mortar locations for independent retailers such as Home Depot and Lowe’s Carpet & Flooring Center - making it one of Texas’ most shopping districts!
