The Clute Coast Guard Station has been in operation since 1912. The station is a National Historic Landmark and was originally built to monitor the Straits of Texas. It now serves as a ceremonial headquarters for the town of Clute, Texas. The Coast Guard Station's gift history begins with two volunteers from New York City who donated their time and equipment to help keep passing ships safe at the Straits of Texas. From then on, donations from individuals and groups kept the coast guard station running smoothly. In 1943, the United States Congress appropriated $5,000 for a new building on the site. The first addition to the station was a small command post that served as an office for Headquarters Battalion 3rd Coast Artillery Regiment until 1951 when it became operational as Commandant's Office. In 1957, Commandant's Office became that agency's permanent home when Headquarters Battalion 7th Coast Artillery Regiment moved into it from its previous location on FM 9394 just north of town. At this time, also came new gifts: A radioship and life jackets for all personnel; an amphibious assault ship named "Pioneer" which could be used for ceremonies or emergency services; and two T-boats which were used for patrols around town during special events like Fourth of July celebrations or local fairs. It began as a community of log cabins in 1876 and grew into a small town with a population of over 1,500 by 1910. The early pioneers who founded Clute were Methodist ministers who came from nearby Fort Worth to start a mission school in 1876. Christianity became an important factor in the community's growth and many people converted to Methodism during this time. In 1916, when it was decided that Clutter would be its own independent school district, most of the original log cabins were destroyed in an flood that occurred on local creek bedings. Despite this setback, the town kept growing and by 1930 had reached its current size with over 2,000 residents living within walking distance of each other." The post-World War II years saw some major changes for Clute; especially during the late 1950s through 1970s when many new subdivisions were developed area within walking distance of downtownClute."
