Cleburne is a town in Archer County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Cleburne was James Fenton in 1843. He and his family were the first white people to live in what is now Archer County. James Fenton's son John Fenton founded a log cabin on the site of present-day Cleburne on July 3, 1849. The post office called Cleburne "Cobb" from 1857 to 1861; "Esquire" from 1865 to 1870; and "Cleburne" from 1871 to 1901. In 1881, Hance Sienkiewicz settled near what is now Cleburne with his family and began operating an agricultural operation that included raising chickens, pigs, cattle, wheat and other crops. In 1902, he built a two-story red brick house at 515 Main Street which still stands today as the only remaining structure in town during that time period. During World War II (1939-1945), Cleburne played host to several military installations including Camp Kilmer (later Fort Sam Houston) and Camp Bowie ( later Camp Bowie). On October 26th 1945 local residents responded to an emergency call for help when a tornado touching down about mile away killed four people within one hour! The Cedar Springs Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene just as the twister lifted off into the night sky leaving behind extensive damage all around town! The following day newspapers reported that $10 thousand had been collected by citizens within hours of the tornado hitting! Within days of this event many businesses had reopened and much reconstruction work had already begun including new churches/synagogues/temples/ schoolhouses/ residences etc...
