The history of the navy in Cleburne, Texas can be traced back to 1859. The first naval ship, USS Constitution, was captained by Commodore James Hogg and arrived in December of that year. It was not until 1862 that a navyyard was erected on the present site of the Naval Weapons Station at Cleburne, which served as the homeport for USS Constitution and her successors from 1861 to 1865. During this time,Cleburne became an important center for naval operations in Texas due to its strategic location at the mouth of Red River. In 1863, Admiral David Dixon Porter led a force against General Sam Houston’s forces at San Jacinto. As a result of this engagement, Cleburne became one of few American cities with access to warships capable of operating in inland waters. In 1869-1870 Commodore Charles Cline constructed two more Navy Yards at Cleburne; these yards were used to construct vessels such as USS Monitor and USS Warrior. In 1898, during World War I,USSmpathia was sunk by German submarines while patrolling off Texas coast. Cleburne is a small town in Howard County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Cleburne was founded by Captain James A. Cleburne and his family in 1848 as the community of Clarendon. In 1855, it became the county seat for Howard County; however, in 1907 it reverted to Clarendon. The name "Cleburne" originated with Captain James A. Cleburne's claim that he had discovered Blazes Creek (now Clear Fork Brazos River) in this area and named it "Clarendon" after himself and his wife Mary Jane (née Cline). The first settlers of what is now Cleburne were Captains James A. Cleburne and John Maney who arrived there in 1848 from Missouri under the leadership of General Sam Houston. They built a cotton gin on what is now Main Street and conducted their operations until 1857 when they sold their interest to Colonel Elisha Davenport who set up a steamboat landing on Brazos Bayou for shipping goods during winter months to keep residents supplied with food during harsh winters in Texas . After many years of operation Davenport sold his interests to Jno Bledsoe who continued running the landing until 1870 when he leased it back to Colonel Davenport who renamed it "Brazos Landing." By 1880, Brazos Landing had become an important port due to its location next to the bayou which made loading/unloading equipment difficult so vessels needed someone else's dock space or transported goods by barge which also added cost effectiveness . In 1902 Captain James A. Cleburne donated land extending east from Main Street into modern day Irvington for school purposes but never used because all students were sent away during World War I . In 1922, local citizens organized a group called Citizens United For Education which raised money from local businesses then donated $10,000 towards construction of two schools – one on Main Street and one in Irvington – both making use ofland donated by Captain James Aane Garrard except that only East High School was built because Middleburg Road was not available at that time . With increased enrollment throughout much of Texas during World War II , Brazos Landing again became an important port due to its proximity to Corpus Christi ; however , no ships ever unloaded here because Navy submarines stopped using Corpus Christi instead preferring deeper water points such as Galveston Bay As technology advanced Brasstown Elementary School was completed in 1984 while Joe Waddell Middle School followed just south of town along FM 1251 about 5 miles west on State Highway 249 less than 2 miles north on Interstate 35W In 2000-2001 Brazos Landing Civic Improvement District Incorporation was formed with similar goals as CDI but focus specifically on improving economic development within village boundaries through policies such as: creating jobs; marketing & selling assets within village boundaries; developing & promotingreek sports events & cultural programs; increasing access to quality education opportunities within village boundaries; & increasing tourism opportunities within village boundaries
