In 1934, Mrs.�Nancy Parkins McCarty donated land near what is now downtown Cleburne for a civic center which she named after her mother who died young while serving as mayor of Dallas during World War I.�The present civic complex includes a library and art gallery.�It served as home to the city hall from 1935 until it burned down in 1978.�The building that housed city hall still stands today across Main Street from City Hall Plaza�It has been used as both an emergency medical services training facility and for storage by various municipal departments over its years of operation.�Cleburne Municipal Court currently occupies part of the building.�On November 5th, 1936 �the first general election held under State law using secret voting �Mr.� Everett Ladd won an open seat on the Dallas County Commissioners Court vacated by Mrs.�Alice McKay after she married Jeffery Tatum McGraw Jr., son of Senator Everett Ladd (D-Dallas) during their honeymoon at Ansonia Beach Hotel�Mrs.�McKenzie became acting county commissioner upon Mr.�Ladd’s resignation effective January 1st 1937 due to illness; she served until December 3rd when Governor James Fenton appointed George Bowen III (D-Houston) to replace him��Governor Bowen remained on commissioners court until April 15th 1945 when he resigned effective noon that day because he had become engaged to Miss Sue Blalock (1914 -1999), daughter of Wm.-Hank Blalock Sr., founder and manager/CEO Lone Star Oil Company
