Cleburne is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Cleburne was Tom Hinson in 1836. In 1845, James Crain bought land from Tom Hinson and named it Cleburne after his mother's birthplace, Clevelyn Township in England. In 1849, Johnathon Neely purchased land from James Crain and renamed it Cleburne after himself - the name would later be used for other towns within Hudspeth County until 1959. In 1860, John Sayers developed a gas station and store at what is now US 281 and Texas Highway 183 near present-day Cleburne Elementary School; this became known as the Sayers Store. The store operated until 1923 when it was moved to its current location on FM 620 east of town. In 1865, Jno Axton built a sawmill on Clear Fork of the Trinity River north of present-day Cleburne; this mill continued operation until 1914 when it was replaced by an electric plant which destroyed part of the dam across Clear Fork which caused flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses in 1915. As early as 1870s there were three churches inCleburne: First Methodist Church (later called Second Baptist), Dutch Reformed Presbyterian Church (now First Unitarian) and Methodist Episcopal Church (the only one left standing). A post office operated under these names from 1870 to 1888 but no mail ever arrived because of difficulties getting through Native American reservations along the route between Cedar Springs and Houston that block mail transportation during those years.
